Abstract:

Until the discovery of gravitational waves and Fast Radio Bursts, all measurements of the universe were fully described by geometric optics.  I will describe recent developments using the coherent wave nature of radiation, that gives qualitatively new information, including probes of dark matter through lensing, the cosmic expansion, and more.  I describe the resolution of some previously ambiguous utilizations of refraction and diffraction needed to quantify this new era, with particular emphasis of the Eikonal limit.

He study systems where basic physical effects can be isolated from astronomical complexities. Current projects include the non-linear dynamics of the cosmic neutrino background, 21cm intensity mapping, pulsar VLBI scintillometry, and Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment CHIME.
